In the current form the Menier Chocolate Factory was opened in 2004, after the building being derelict for over 20 years. The following year the theatre was awarded the Empty Space Up & Coming Venue award.

2007 saw the Chocolate Factory produce Sunday in the Park with George which won 5 Olivier Awards. Actors Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively and then went on to carry on in the lead roles when the musical moved to Broadway in 2008. Continuing success with Oliver Award wins, in 2009 Douglas Hodge won Best Actor in a Musical for his role of Zaza in La Cage aux Folles.
