Next year is due to see the return of the stage version of 42nd Street, which will be the first time it has been on stage in London since 1990, when Catherine Zeta-Jones was 2nd understudy to Barbara King. This production also won the Best Musical Olivier award in 1984. Although the show has been seen at other locations in the UK since then, including the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2010.
The new show will be directed by the original show’s co-author Mark Bramble, who is promising more singing and dancing than ever before seen, a stunning technicolor version!
The stage show is based on the film, which was made in 1933 and starred none other than dancing legend Ginger Rogers and in 1998 was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Much later, in 2006, it was ranked number 13 on the American Film Institute’s list of best musicals.
The original stage show was first seen on Broadway in 1980 and the following year was awarded Best Musical at the Tony Awards in 1981. In 2001 42nd Street was revived on Broadway and won further awards, including a Tony award for Musical Revival. A Broadway revival in 2001 brought further accolades, including a Tony for musical revival.
The location for the new version will be the Theatre Royal Drury Lane which is currently the home of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
