Currently Groundhog Day is running at the Old Vic in London, but only until 17th September 2016.  Maybe it is the success in London that means Groundhog Day will not appear on the Broadway stage until March 2017.

This production, a stage adaptation of the 1993 film of the same name, is led by Andy Karl [ whos other credits include On the Twentieth Century, Rocky, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Jersey Boys, Wicked, 9 to 5, Legally Blonde, The Wedding Singer and Saturday Night Fever ] as Phil, and with Carlyss Peer as Rita.

There is no shortage of experience and talent associated with the production; directed by Matthew Warchus, a score by Tim Minchin, choreography by Peter Darling and designs by Rob Howell – who, together are four of the creators of the international sensation Matilda The Musical.  They have got together with  writer Danny Rubin to collaborate on this new musical based on his 1993 hit film.

For those of you who have never seen the film or the musical, Phil Connors – TV weather man – reluctantly, for the 3rd year, covers the story of the annual Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney.  He is frustrated, and doesn’t pretend otherwise, but does the cover, and expects his job to be over.  The next day, when he wakes, he finds that it’s Groundhog Day again, as he becomes caught in a time loop …… he needs to  find a way out of this and break the cycle …

Groundhog Day tickets for London can still be bought, through till 17th September 2016, after that you may need to travel to Broadway to see this musical.
