Sand in the Sandwiches

In Sand in the Sandwiches, Edward Fox returns to the London stage with this highly acclaimed portrayal of poet laureate and one of Britain’s most well know poet, John Betjeman (1906 – 1984).

John Betjeman was famous for his poetry, light verse, laughter, passions and sense of purpose. He began his career as a journalist and ended it as one of the most popular British Poets Laureate, a position he held from 1972 until his death in 1984, and a much-loved figure on British television.

This play celebrates the life of Betjeman. Edward Fox (himself a very well known, award-winning British icon with films to his credit including The Day of The Jackal, A Bridge Too Far, Oh! What A Lovely War), brings to life on stage the personality and wit of Betjeman.

John Betjeman delighted in nostalgia and was passionate about Victorian architecture. He was born and raised in London, and was in fact taught by T S Eliot at Highgate School, and his tutor at Magdalen College at Oxford University was C S Lewis.
