The Tempest

We are very excited to have tickets for a range of plays at the Barbican, presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company this year.

The Tempest is scheduled for a 7 week limited run from 30th June to 18th August 2017 with Simon Russell Beale as Prospero, with this production directed by Gregory Doran.

The Tempest is set on a distant island, where Prospero, the magician waits, after being abandoned in isolation by his enemies, who have stolen his position, power and his wealth. This magician, however, can control nature and the elements.  This control allows him to create a storm that will cause the ship carrying his enemies to be wrecked. Where will they find themselves?

We now have The Tempest tickets on sale.

In addition to The Tempest, we also have the RSC Rome mmxvi Season on sale, which includes Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, Antony & Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus. These shows will run at the Barbican between 6th November 2017 and 20th January 2018. These four are arguably the Baird’s most gripping plays.

Coriolanus tickets are on sale from 6th to 18th November 2017. This play takes us back to the emergence of the republic of Rome, where war is the main theme. Angus Jackson is the director of this production, with rising star Sope Dirisu playing the role of Coriolanus as the fearless soldier, but not an enthusiastic leader, despite his mother’s wishes for him to be powerful. This production comes to London following Angus Jackson’s sell-out direction of Oppenheimer (2014) and Don Quixote (2016) at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford on Avon.

Julius Caesar tickets are on sale from 24th November 2017 through to 20th January 2018. Again directed by Angus Jackson, this is a political tragedy of epic proportions. The empire is out of control and as Caesar returns as a hero from war, he faces mutiny and whilst Brutus might love Caesar he is convinced that the death of Caesar is the right thing, and is persuaded to kill him.

With a cast that includes Andrew Woodall as Julius Caesar; Alex Waldmann as Brutus and Martin Hutson as Cassius this play brings a thrilling story of political intrigue, backstabbing and spin, with betrayal inevitably leading to violence.

Antony & Cleopatra tickets are on sale from 30th November 2017 to 20th January 2018. One of the all-time greatest love stories, continues the history where Julius Caesar ends.  As Caesar is assassinated, Mark Antony comes to power, but is willing to neglect his empire for the seduction of his mistress, Cleopatra who is Queen of Egypt. As Antony neglects his duty his passion leads them both to their tragic end.  Iqbal Khan directs Josette Simon and Antony Byrne as Cleopatra and Mark Antony, while the music is written by Laura Mvula.

Titus Andronicus tickets are on sale from 7th December 2017 to 19th January 2018.

Blanche McIntyre directs this epic finale of the Rome Season as the decay of Rome is portrayed in Shakespeare’s most brutal and gory play. Titus is an exhausted ruler, war has taken its toll and he gives up power, but Rome is in complete disorder. This corrupt civilisation is full of rape, cannibalism amongst other amoral behaviours. This gory revenge brings us murder as entertainment as David Troughton leads the cast of the play where tragedy poses the questions around the nature of sexuality, family, class and society.

If you are a Shakespeare fan this fabulous Rome Season will satisfy your needs in the largest performing arts centre in Europe, and certainly one of London’s world-class locations.
