In 1782, the owners of the Zong ship claimed insurance on the lives of the 130 slaves thrown overboard. Over a hundred years later, the Kala Pani prison (“Black Waters” in Hindi) was used by the British to contain Indian independence activists in horrendous conditions.
These two stories inspire a powerful commentary on colonialism in this new work from our National Partner Company. Black Waters is choreographed by Phoenix Dance Theatre’s artistic director Sharon Watson in collaboration with Kolkata-based Rhythomosaic’s Shambik Ghose and Dr Mitul Sengupta.
